PMP Eligibility Requirements: Do You Qualify?

Before you book PMP training, it is worth checking whether you meet the PMP eligibility requirements. PMI checks education, experience and training, and it can audit your application, so it pays to get this right.

The Two Main Routes to Eligibility

If you have a four-year degree

36 months of experience leading projects within the past eight years
35 contact hours of project management education (or a CAPM certification)

If you have a secondary diploma

60 months of experience leading projects within the past eight years
35 contact hours of project management education (or a CAPM certification)

PMI occasionally updates these rules, so always confirm the latest criteria in the PMP Certification Handbook on pmi.org.

What Counts as Project Management Experience?

You do not need the job title "Project Manager". PMI looks at what you did: leading and directing project work, such as planning, scheduling, managing budgets, coordinating teams, handling risks or reporting to stakeholders. Engineers, coordinators, team leaders and consultants often qualify through this kind of work.

Tips for a Smooth Application

Describe each project briefly using the project objective, your role, your responsibilities and the outcome.
Keep contact details of supervisors who can confirm your experience in case of an audit.
Keep your 35-hour training certificate ready to upload.
